What is Hotlink Protection, and how do I use it?

Hotlinking is when another web site owner links directly to one or more of your images or multimedia files and includes it on their webpage. Not only is this theft of your intellectual property, you are paying for the bandwidth used by that site. The Hotlink Protection feature can prevent hotlinking by only allowing named sites (such as your own web site) to access files on your site.

Steps

1. To prevent hotlinking, click on the "HotLink Protection" link on the main page of your control panel (cPanel).

2. In the "URLs to allow access" field, enter any other addresses that you will allow to access your site other than the provided defaults.

3. In the "Extensions to protect (seperate by commas)" field, enter the protected extensions. Make sure you separate each extension with a comma.

4. In the "Redirect HotLink attempts to" field, enter a web address that you want all hotlinking attempts point to.

5. Click on the "Allow direct requests" checkbox if you want to allow direct URL access to non-HTML files, such as images.

6. Click on the "Enable/Modify" button to enable protection.

Note: You must also click on the "Enable/Modify" button every time a change is made on any of the fields. Please be advised that you SHOULD NOT be using this feature if you are also using Microsoft FrontPage to publish your page
